How to Clean and Maintain Your Resin Bound Surface – The Complete Aftercare Guide
One of the most appealing things about investing in a resin bound surface for your driveway, patio, or pathway, is how easy they are to care for. Thanks to the resin-encapsulated stones, dirt and grime don’t cling the way they do to porous block paving or concrete. This means cleaning is easier, quicker, and far less frequent.
Better yet, resin bound surfacing can be jet washed without damaging the structure, and with a permeable base, water drains away naturally – no puddles, no fuss. But to keep your surface looking as good as the day it was installed, it’s important to follow some simple resin driveway aftercare and maintenance tips.
Immediate Aftercare – The First Few Days Matter
The curing stage is the most important part of protecting your new resin surface. Here’s what to do (and avoid) during those first few days:
-
Curing time: Do not walk on the surface for 24–48 hours and avoid driving for 48–72 hours after installation. Warmer or cooler temperatures can affect this time, so follow your installer’s exact advice.
-
Keep it dry: Make sure there are no leaks or drips on the surface while curing. Excess moisture can weaken and discolour the resin.
-
No footprints: Prevent people, pets, and wildlife from walking on it. Footprints in resin cannot be removed.
Protecting Your Resin Bound Driveway From Damage
After curing, resin bound surfaces are durable, but like any paving, they last longer with proper care:
-
Avoid static wheel turning: Turning vehicle wheels while stationary can dislodge stones.
-
Prevent heavy impact: Don’t drop heavy tools or place skips directly on the surface. If you must, use wooden boards for weight distribution.
-
Guard against chemicals: Spills of petrol, oil, or solvents should be diluted and cleaned immediately to avoid degrading the resin binder.
-
Prevent discolouration: Avoid placing plant pots, mats, or boxes directly on the surface long-term – raised pots are a safer choice.
Regular Cleaning for a Long-Lasting Finish
Maintaining resin bound surfacing is simple, but regular cleaning will help keep it looking vibrant for years. Use a jet wash occasionally, holding the lance at a 90° angle and 300mm from the surface to avoid damage.
Oil and dirt won’t stain if cleaned quickly. Blot spills and use an emulsifying degreaser if needed, but avoid harsh solvents. Weeds and moss are rare if a membrane was used during installation, but any growth can be removed with a jet wash or moss treatment.
Rust stains (from furniture or aggregates) can be treated with non-acidic rust remover, while tyre marks come off with steam cleaning or hot water and detergent. Sweep away leaves and berries regularly to prevent staining. For stubborn marks, a sodium hypochlorite mix (1.5L sodium hypochlorite, 4.5L water, 100ml baby shampoo) works well. Just spray, scrub, leave for 15 minutes, then rinse.
After 2–4 years, consider a refresh with a polyurethane UV resin sealer following a deep clean. This helps restore colour and protect against wear.
By following these simple cleaning and aftercare tips, your resin bound driveway, path, or patio will stay beautiful, functional, and low-maintenance for many years.
